Quick – what three words describe your decorating style? If you can’t answer the question right now, here’s a fun way to find out. Sit down with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, relax, and log in to Pinterest.
Pinterest is a visual wonderland of design, architecture, fashion, recipes, do-it-yourself advice, gardens –you name it. It’s easy to get an account and start “pinning” pictures. If you already have Pinterest boards, you’re way ahead on this exercise! You can browse my boards here. I try to add new pins daily.
Once you have some decorating boards put together, look for commonalities in the pictures you’ve selected. They’re there, even if you can’t see them initially. To be honest, I had trouble with my own three words. After analyzing my pins, without thinking about anything else in my design world, I came up with classic, colorful, and curated. It was like an epiphany to see that those words describe my work and my own home too.
Classic – “Something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality.” Yes! Interior design is an investment, so hopefully the results will last for a good long while. Classic transcends genres. What is classic in French Country is different than what’s classic in Mid-Century Modern, but I appreciate both and everything in between.
Colorful – Color is a powerful way to bring personality and interest to a space. Even when I use white or tone-on- tone, it’s for a certain reason.
Curated – My Pinterest boards are about 95% finished spaces versus singular objects or products. I notice everything – the textures, the furniture, the materials, the mood, the accessories, the window treatments, and the way a space is layered and lit.
To get your juices flowing, here are some descriptive words:
Comfortable, casual, formal, eclectic, funky, monochromatic, moody, traditional, transitional, contemporary, serene, bright, light, collected, country, rustic, modern, minimalist, subtle, airy, ornamented, coastal, preppy, cottage, neutral, cozy, layered, simple, industrial.
Please leave your three words in the comments! I’d love to get to know you better!
